The first Iron Dog race started in 1984, making this year the 35th anniversary of this tough, rugged Alaskan race. The iron dog is known as the world’s longest and toughest snowmobile race, and for good reason. At 2,031 miles, it is the longest high-speed cross-country snowmobile race in the world, so I guess you could call this race “Alaskan sized.” The race starts off right here in Anchorage on 4th avenue and follows part of the Iditarod Trail, goes all the way to Nome, and finishes in Fairbanks. The temperatures are well below freezing and can be as low as -50 degrees Fahrenheit. Some drivers apply duct tape to their faces to prevent frostbite. These fearless racers reach speeds of up to 100 mph on some parts of the trail! What started out as a small competition, is now one of Alaska’s most popular events celebrated by locals all over the state.

These medallions are available in 4 different options, bronze, 1 oz. pure silver, and silver with 24K gold highlights on the front or both sides which really helps the design “pop”. This multi-struck medallion is minted in proof condition and comes packaged in an air-tite container and a gift box.
