The Alaska Mint proudly presents the 2018 Official State of Alaska medallion designed by Megan Warren, a local Tlingit Alaskan Native that is attending the University of Alaska, Anchorage. The 2018 State Medallion features a Cessna 206 bush plane flying over a moose in Denali National park, one of Alaska’s most visited attractions. Over 600,000 tourists come from all over the world every year to see the beauty that Denali National Park has to offer. The Cessna 206 is considered the workhorse of the Alaska Bush. When equipped with tundra tires, the 206 can land anywhere from a runway to riverside gravel bars. They can even have floats put on so they can land in the water as well. That’s what makes this plane so popular in Alaska because it is so versatile and can land just about anywhere. Small planes, otherwise known as “bush planes” offer the only practical way to reach many remote areas of rural Alaska. Today, there is approximately one pilot for every fifty Alaskans, making the 49th state the seventh busiest for air traffic in the nation.

These medallions are available in 6 sizes, and 3 metal types, pure silver, silver with gold highlights, and pure 24karat solid gold. These are minted in limited quantities and have been popular with collectors for over 25 years. We started minting these "Alaskan Sized" medallions in 1999, this image is captured 2 inches in diameter, compared with the standard silver dollar sized 1oz medallion.
